Travelling can always be fun, especially when you bring your furry friends. However, travelling with your pet(s) isn’t always as easy as it may seem. There are many things that must be accounted for when you plan on travelling with your pet to help make the trip less stressful for you and for your pet. Here are 4 tips to help make your trip with your pet stress free.

  1. Vet visit– One of the first things you’ll want to do before planning your trip with your pet is to take them to visit the vet. Some animals simply can’t handle some of the stresses of travel due to age, medical conditions, injuries, or temperament. When you visit the vet, you can also check their vaccine status and check other important documents you may need for them, such as a national health certificate, rabies/pet tag, or a microchip.
  2. Room for your pet– When travelling with your pet, you want to make sure that they have plenty of room. If they are in a crate or carrier, you’ll want to make sure they have enough room to be able to turn around. If they are not kept in a carrier or crate you may want to bring the bed they sleep on. Dogs especially are used to routines, so having their bed they sleep on all the time can help to keep them in one space and reduce their anxiety.
  3. Food and water– It’s usually a good idea to get a new bag of food for your pet before leaving. The amount you buy will depend on the size of your pet, your duration of travel, and the age of your pet. Having water with you on to keep your pet hydrated is important too. Bringing their own food bowls is also a good idea to help reduce travelling anxiety.
  4. Destination– Making sure your destination is one that will be enjoyable for your pet also. For instance, if you are planning a trip to Las Vegas to hit the casinos, then that probably won’t be a good experience for your pet. Depending on your pet and their breed can help you determine if the trip is something that you and your pet would enjoy.
